About John

John Conlin, founder of End the Education Plantation, is mad as hell and isn’t willing to take it anymore.

John is a self-employed management consultant. In the course of his work he has been to some of the toughest neighborhoods in America. While there, John saw the same thing over and over again: Young children playing like all children do. But, as they got older, they had a harder and harder look in their eyes. And, by the time they were 10 or so, they had a look in their eyes that no child in America should have.

In many cases their only hope is the chance for a decent education. But, rather than being a sanctuary from the madness into which they were born, their public schools are the worst in the country.

That’s bad enough. But John has discovered what many parents already knew: Schools all across the country and in all kinds of neighborhoods are failing far too many of their students.

It’s obvious the problems aren’t due to a lack of funding. Funding for education has increased dramatically over the years. Spending on K-12 schools, adjusting for inflation and enrollment growth, has roughly tripled over the last 50 years.

It’s also obvious the problems aren’t due to bad teachers. America’s classrooms are filled with dedicated, hardworking teachers.

The problem lies with the very design of the system. And no amount of personal effort will fix a broken system. The only real solution: Change the system.

John freely admits he’s no expert in K-12 education. But, as an expert in organizational design and change, he understands the only way to quickly transform this failing system is to make one change in its design: Give every parent in America the power to choose a school for their children that offers them a good education. With Education Freedom Accounts, parents rather than bureaucrats will decide how the public funds used to educate their children will be spent.

That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. This one change will transform the K-12 education system. This one change will unleash the creative talents and wisdom of literally millions of education experts – parents and teachers all over America.

The problems with our educational system are a moral outrage,” says John. “I believe this is the civil rights issue of today. If enough of us join together to tell the President and Congress to act, we can fix the problem almost overnight.”

Who We Are

End the Education Plantation is a temporary nonprofit organization founded by John Conlin of Littleton, Colorado, because he’s seen first-hand the harm being caused by our nation’s schools. We are a grassroots organization with one and only one goal: Give every parent in America the opportunity to send their children to schools offering a quality education.
